New Year Traditions: Get Rid Of The Chen For 2010
The New Year has arrived and now is the perfect time for a new start. It is a must to think about change and a new beginning. That’s what I love about starting a whole New Year, that no matter what happened in the past, we feel this urge to do things differently, well at least those things that for some reason were not done right before. In the Chinese language the words dust and old are pronounced the same: “chen”. Therefore getting rid of the “chen” simply means dusting the old dirt off to start with a brand new and clean space.
According to an oriental tradition for the New Year, in order to receive the blessings and prosperity of the New Year, one must clean the spaces and get rid of all the old and non-useful stuff.
Just before the first day of the New Year or on the same first day, I always clean my office and my closet. I like to get rid of all the old stuff that’s just using up space and I haven’t used in a while. I like to get rid of all those pants and shirts that I don’t wear anymore and get rid of all the papers that are just collecting dust.
This year I realized that I could do the same thing with my inner side, I could clean up my mind and get rid of all my mental dust and dirt, so I could start with a brand new and clean mind. Kind of like emptying the cup to make some space for more good tea to pour in.
It can also be applied to the emotional inner side, get rid of all those feelings, emotions, behaviors that are not helping us at all and therefore are in the way of our happiness. The truth is that God cannot give us something if our hands are busy holding something else, so we must free up the space so that the amazing prosperous universe of the Almighty can give us what we long for.
So now that we are entering a new decade, let’s make sure we dust off our inner “chen” so we truly start with a clean slate. As we go about doing this, we will be preparing ourselves for a better year, embrassing every new opportunity we encounter. And then, and only then, we might get luckily. As Earl Nightingale once said “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity” Let’s get ready then.
I wish you nothing but success for 2010!
